Vote for Your Favorite Name of Next Generation Video Coding Standard
2009-10-11 News View Comments Views(2,909)As mentioned in the previous post, MPEG/VCEG has launched a new video coding standardization project, which is tentatively named as High-performance Video Coding (HVC). The formal name is still under discussion. A short list of candidates most supported in MPEG-newvid mailing list are summarized by Ken McCann from ZetaCast,
- HVC – High-efficiency Video Coding (Note: not High-performance Video Coding? I prefer the latter)
- EPVC – Enhanced Performance Video Coding
- HEVC – High Efficiency Video Coding
- HCEV – High Coding Efficiency Video
An online poll was set up at Doodle [Poll: Name of new MPEG/VCEG Standard]. Â Your opinion is very important. Please vote with your real name to keep the process transparent.

I’d prefer Superior Video Coding but SVC is already occupied…

it seems, HVC is better than others. What about EMPVC ( Enhanced Motion Pıctures Vıdeo Coding) ? Why not..

I would sincerely prefer HVC because abbreviations are made for better communication.
It is similar to AVC.
It is short.
It is precise.
And ‘Efficiency’ stands for both compression and complexity.
It is appealing.
{I hope I was of some help.}

HVC is short and precise.
I think it is better than others.
Both High-performance Video Coding and High-efficiency Video Coding are great, but I prefer the latter one.
Maybe..I like efficiency.

What will be the MPEG number of H.265? MPEG-5, right?
# 2009-10-20 Tuesday 2:43 pm
I don’t think so. MPEG-4/HVC or MPEG-8 sounds reasonable, since MPEG video standards seem to prefer the even number or 2^N.

MPEG-8 sounds like way too big of a step, especially if they held onto MPEG-4 for such a long damn time. I also think it will be MPEG-4/HVC, but I was hoping for an official reference, is there any out there?

I can suggest MPEG-5 or Ultra Video Coding (MPEG-4/UVC) or Extented Video Coding (MPEG-4/EVC)?
or:
Advanced Extended Video Coding (AEVC).

HVC – High Performance and Efficient AVC
eAVC – Enhanced AVC
iAVC – Improved AVC

HDVC – High Definition Video Coding
Everybody knows HD trade mark, so the shortcut is obvious !

From the proposed ones the HVC sounds good, but I think that if the new standard follows the official name evolution (i.e. H.265 or MPEG-x), then it is not necessary to add descriptive names. The reason is that once these standards become old, then their descriptive names sound very optimistic for that period of time.

I would prefer HVC.
